Canon EOS R6 Cinematic Video Short Film

Quick little cinematic style short film, captured on the Canon EOS R6. Time spent home during this pandemic has provided me a bit of free time. Why not make a short film!

With the assistance of my wife, whom starred in this short feature, we filmed all the footage in roughly 3 hours.

I used an Atomos Ninja V to capture the 10 Bit 4k footage which also facilitated any potential overheating issues cropped up. Shot using a Sigma 24mm 1.4 Art Lens which performed solidly when combined with Canon’s Dual Pixel Auto Focus.

Canon EOS R + Metabones + Atomos Ninja V

Canon EOS R + Metabones + Atomos Ninja V

You can greatly improve Video Quality or your EOS R with the addition of a Metabones SpeedBooster as well as recording externally from your Canon EOS R to the Atomos Ninja V.

I recently tested the combination during a Short Film title Pawns of the Game shown above. Filmed entirely on the EOS R in 4K.

The video quality from the EOS R using 10 Bit External recording to the Ninja V is quite astonishing compared to the internal 8 Bit. I was pleasantly surprised. It allowed for way better color grading.

Although the Metabones Speedbooster is not necessary for 10 Bit external recording, it vastly improves the 4k Crop. Reducing it from 1.76 to 1.24. It paired very well on the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens.

Another useful benefit from the Metabones Speedbooster is that it will also provide an extra stop of light with certain lenses. For example, the Canon EF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 became an F/2.8-4 … I also tried the Canon EF 50mm F1.2 and it remained at F1.2n

Canon EOS R6 Cinematic 4k Music Video Test

Recently relinquished my Canon 5D Mark IV and acquired the Canon EOS R6. I wanted to test the 4k Capability using several EF style lenses as well as an RF 35mm 1.8 Macro Lens.

The 4k on this camera is definitely sharper and more vivid when I compare it to 4k Footage from my 5DM4 and EOS R. The footage held up across the lenses (I should of marked which lenses were used on each scene…. sigh… next time).

All shots were handheld. The new in-body stabilization also held up well even when used with a non stabilized lens (Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art and the Canon EF 50mm 1.2). Digital Stabilization was disabled.

Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art Lens
Canon EF 10-18mm STM 4.5
Canon EF 50mm 1.2

Summer Wedding Video in Atlanta

Beautiful Summer Wedding of Jonathan + Haroline

These two couldn’t of picked a better time or place to have a Summer Wedding. Hosted just north of Atlanta in Gwinnett County. The wedding setup and scenery was perfect for capturing on film. It was one of the most laid back and chilled weddings I have ever attended.

Following the Ceremony, it just about turned into music fest!

Shot mostly on my Canon 5D Mark IV with a Canon 50mm 1.2 and filled in with shots from my Canon 80D with the Canon 70mm – 300mm lens, it gave it more of a Royal wedding feel.

Girls EYBL Nike Elite Basketball

Nike Elite Basketball

It was a privilege to witness the hustle and grind on the part of these young ladies, many whom I wouldn’t be surprised to see in the WNBA. The workout session for Team Elite Hubbard is the real deal! The work ethic is not for the feint of heart.

Nike Elite basketball is an awesome program for both young men and ladies. Always great to see the youth involved with a positive activity not just physically, but mentally as the EYBL indoctrinates the fundamental values and thought process you need to succeed on the Basketball court.

If you have an opportunity, go see the Girls EYBL Nike Elite team do their thing!

Canon 5D Mark IV Slow Motion Test

Smooth 60fps Slow Motion on Canon 5D Mark IV

Spontaneous slow motion video fun with Mrs Reel Cool Filmz stepping in front of the camera as she helps me test out the 60fps slow motion capability of the Canon 5D Mark IV. I also used an Ikan Beholder DS1 gimbal to facilitate smooth footage.

If you have a Canon 5D Mark IV or other DSLR, and want to know how to shoot slow motion, here’s how I did it. To accomplish this you basically need a camera that shoots above 30 frames per second for best results. This particular footage was shot at 60fps with the Shutter Speed set at 125. The footage was then imported into Adobe Premiere Pro and interpreted at 24fps on the timeline.

Interpreting your 60fps Footage in Adobe Premiere

To Interpret footage in Adobe Premiere, you will need to import your video file from the Media Browser into your main project folder. Then right click your imported video file and select >> Modify >> Interpret Footage and choose >> Assume this frame rate and set it to 24fps.

Or the alternative way is to drag your clip to the timeline straight from the Media Browser. Then right click the video clip on the timeline and select >> Speed/Duration. Set the speed percentage to 40%. This accomplishes the same effect as above.

Looking at the provided video sample above, given the weight of my camera I wasn’t sure how the Ikan Beholder DS1 would hold up, but to my surprise it performed solidly for roughly the entire 45 minute duration we shot.

Playback at 24fps produced a nice smooth slow motion that I further expounded on in the follow up Slow Motion Lip Sync test on the Canon 80D.

Other methods

It is also possible (but not recommended) to shoot 24fps and produce a semi-smooth slow motion effect. I recently had the privilege of providing Wedding Videography in Atlanta, and I didn’t have time to switch from 24fps to 60fps during the entrance and shot the sequence in 24fps on my Canon 5D Mark IV. In post I slowed the footage down by 20% and smoothed it out with optical flow in Premiere. Again… I wouldn’t recommend it, but it worked out well enough in a pinch!
